4squick http://blog.4squick.com Super fast and awesome Foursquare app for Nokia touch phones posterous.com Wed, 14 Dec 2011 01:42:00 -0800 Long time no see http://blog.4squick.com/long-time-no-see http://blog.4squick.com/long-time-no-see

Hi there! It's been a while but we're still here.

The reason why there has been little to no updates to 4squick is that there has been quite a lot of changes in the team members lives during the past ~three months. All of us have either changed jobs to entirely different ones we had before or moved to different projects. One team member had a lovely new born a few weeks ago!

For the past ~2 weeks Nokia Developer Projects site has been down and still is. We are hosting our code repository, ticketing system, wiki documentation etc there and have not been able to access those at all. Luckily our source code is safe due to us using a decentralized version control system.

At the same time Nokia Store Publisher site has not been updating our statistics at all for the past few weeks. We have no idea if anybody has downloaded/bought our app during that time. Also we have not received any actual monetary payments from Store, but we're guessing that's due to Operator billing and credit card billing taking some time to get processed.

Upcoming bug fixes update

All that said, we're sorry that there has been so little updates to 4squick lately. We have identified few critical implementation changes from foursquare's API side which we have to address with a bug fix update soon. These critical errors are: a) New users are not able to login to foursquare at all when starting up the application for the first time and b) New earned badges are not visible when checking in.

We're also working on new features, but these will still take some time to polish.

On behalf of the 4squick team,
Ville

Edit 2011/12/29: Nokia Developer Projects and Publisher problems have been fixed now.

We're taking 4squick out of beta with a brand new release.

4squick v1.00 pro is available today @ Nokia Store for all Symbian^3 and MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan devices world wide (please note that it might take some time to replicate the app to your local Store, so please be patient)!

This release brings a couple of new features, mainly related to notifications and commenting. Now you can comment on all of your friends' check-ins and get notified whenever something happens in Foursquare. You can also add multiple photos to your check-in, even afterwards just like in tips.

Then there are a couple of smaller things like showing badges and mayorships, adding/removing friendships and quite a bunch of UI fixes.

We also got photo uploader selector run a lot smoother. Now it also displays ALL the photos stored in your device (MOLOME support anyone? yep, got it!)

What's new in v1.00 pro

  • Notifications
  • Commenting of check-ins
  • Upload more photos to a check-in you did earlier
  • Friend management
  • List of badges
  • List of mayorships
  • Photo uploader shows all the photos and is a lot faster
  • UI modifications and bug fixes

Limited time offer

As a thank you to all our loyal beta users and 5/5 star reviewers @ Store, we're giving out this version for the lowest possible price point available (excluding free) for a limited period of time. That's only 1 EUR or 0.99 USD or similar in your currency! The offer is only valid for a week, so act fast!

Edit: Harmattan version is live now!

PS. Free version will be updated with some of pro's functionality in the future.

Sat, 17 Sep 2011 05:08:00 -0700 4squick v0.96 beta now available in Ovi Store http://blog.4squick.com/4squick-v096-beta-now-available-in-ovi-store http://blog.4squick.com/4squick-v096-beta-now-available-in-ovi-store

First ever Ovi Store release of 4squick is now available for Symbian^3 and MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan phones.

What's new in v0.96 beta

  • First Store release of 4squick!
  • Venue Add functionality
  • Call to venue
  • Open venue's Twitter
  • Replaced Pure with Arial due to multiple issues

This version is still free. It will expire when we release a new update. Later on we're going to release a paid version. When that happens, a free version will probably continue to live with some features removed. We'll give users more insight when we know exactly what's going to happen.

Uninstall old version first

If you have used 4squick earlier, you need to uninstall old version before the new Store version can be installed. In some cases you'll see two apps: "4squick" and "4squick installer". Uninstall both.

After you have uninstalled previous versions, just click the link below or head to Nokia Ovi Store and search for 4squick!

If you still cannot install, do the following Voodoo Magic (Symbian3 only, sounds strange but it does work for some reason unknown to man): Install v0.95, leave it, install v0.96 from Store, wait for installation to fail, uninstall v0.95, click Smart Installer icon from Application grid to install v0.96.

Download 4squick v0.96 beta from Ovi Store

Edit: N9 version is out now too.

Hi, just a quick message to give you a bit information on what's cooking @ 4squick labs!

You might have heard it already from Twitter – we're preparing the first ever Ovi Store release of 4squick. This version will still be free and basically contains v0.95 functionality with a couple of smallish additions.

Later on we're going to release a paid version. When that happens, a free version will probably continue to live with some features removed. We'll give you more insight when we know exactly what's going to happen. No need to worry that the app's gonna die suddenly. We're still pondering between options and will shout out when there's something to tell.

A couple of screens from the latest development version below..

There is something about being the first ever1) to offer an epic feature for all the millions of Nokia people out there. And today we're doing just that.

After bringing super fluid UI to S^3 and constantly expanding feature set, we are truly excited to give you all..

Photo upload

4squick_095_1

More screenshots of 4squick

Since Nokia cameras are way better than any other vendors' out there, we decided to up the resolution a bit. While the official iPhone app uploads only 720px photos, we do it in a glorious 960px fashion.

So, how about unleashing your motherf#&king cameras and FILL UP Foursquare with your photos today!

Changelog (version 0.95)

  • Upload photo to venues, check-ins and tips
  • Upload photo to a tip you wrote earlier
  • Show tip photos
  • Minor modifications and bug fixes

As always, your feedback is more than welcome!

Download 4squick v0.95 now!

Just press "Check for updates" from your 4squick app or head to download page to get yours today.

Notes:

Please note that uploading photos will cause a lot of network traffic. This will cause $$$ costs to YOU if you do not have a reasonable mobile data plan.

1) Yes, we know that there has been a couple of other .. ermm.. clunky ways to upload photos to Foursquare from Nokia devices, but in our opinion this is the way it should've been from the get-go.

Ok ok, it's out there as some of you already noticed ;) We decided to go ahead and just update the Automatic update version.. And keep a couple of hours radio silence and just and see how long it takes until you find out. Not too long, it seems! Also the app update mechanism has proven to work.

Version 0.9047 adds venue photos support, tips support and search history / top searches. And naturally again a lot of fixes here and there.

This is the best version yet and we warmly recommend you to update. Looks awesomely good with the fresh Anna update!

Mon, 08 Aug 2011 06:33:00 -0700 Turns out 4squick @ Symbian^1 does not work afterall http://blog.4squick.com/turns-out-4squick-symbian1-does-not-work-afte http://blog.4squick.com/turns-out-4squick-symbian1-does-not-work-afte

Sorry for getting S^1 people hopes up for nothing. Seems that only way around Symbian^1 issue is to first allow 4squick Foursquare access from a working S^3 or Harmattan device and only after that go on and login with a S^1 device.

After looking around a bit it seems like a Qt/QML Webview bug. Changing user agent etc does not help.

Since there is very little we can do about it we're probably going to pull off the Symbian^1 version since it's not working for practically anybody.

Sigh :(

Workaround in full details if somebody wants to try:

  • Use a Symbian^3 or Harmattan device
  • Launch 4squick and login with your account
  • Allow 4squick Foursquare access
  • Logout
  • Use your Symbian^1 device
  • Launch 4squick and login with your account
  • Since application is already allowed, everything should work now

Fri, 05 Aug 2011 14:35:00 -0700 MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan build is out! (updated) http://blog.4squick.com/64092056 http://blog.4squick.com/64092056

Better late than never.. MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan build is out!

Known issues:

  • Ui is directly from Symbian^3 build so buttons are a bit small, there is a lot of white space on the Ui. Google Maps also gives only 640x640 map tiles, so Venue Map page is not.. perfect.
  • Do not use the custom Pure Font 4squick provides, switch it off. Custom Pure Font is disabled in this build, uses the built-in one instead.

Last but not least.. Naah.. Go and download it already! :)

Download 4squick v0.8008 now!

Edit: Updated 4squick for MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan now available from the same link. Fixes single instance bug and works now in Nokia N9! Re-download and install if you had trouble with the previous version.

New week, new release! Sorry for releasing this often, but we think its better to get new stuff out there than to hold on to them ;)

Version 0.8008 adds a couple of features which are kind of preparations to do more awesome stuff in the future. Some things need to be there before others.. This version also addresses a couple of bugs (like the notorious #hashtag crash).

Among the new features we made the UI go faster. After using this new version for a while you'll begin to notice the difference. Not only faster, but we also try to keep your data costs at minimum by not downloading everything again (and again and again..)

My check-in history and Friends' check-in history pages do just that, display history of check-ins.

Automatic update checking keeps your copy of 4squick fresh by notifying you about new versions and letting you download them directly from your mobile.

Minor UI details such as Persons Here count was added to lists. We also added a setting for Nokia Pure font so that no custom builds are needed anymore. Please switch off Nokia Pure font if you experience any trouble with text rendering.

So.. What do you think about 4squick? Are we on a right track?

Changelog (version 0.8008)

  • Symbian^1 (N97mini etc) devices support Does not, unfortunately, work afterall :(
  • Friends' latest checkins page
  • My check-in history page
  • Built-in application updater
  • People here now count added to lists
  • Too-fast-back-presser accidental quit prevention [tm]
  • Setting for Pure font
  • Share to Facebook/Twitter uses defaults from Foursquare.com
  • Ui improvements (can you find them all?:)
  • Fix: Hash (#) in shout crashed the app
  • Fix: multiple minor annoyances

Download 4squick v0.8008 now!

Edit: Pulled Symbian^1 release because it does not work properly. Sorry.

Since we first rolled out in June we've seen over 1100 individuals taken 4squick into use. That's without us being @ Ovi Store - we just went and put up a sis file into inter webs, tweeted a bit and community did the rest.

So basically.. you guys rock! We hope to see you all early August – that's when we'll release a new version of the app! \o/

Oh and we only track for statistics: 4squick app version, device model, OS version and firmware version. And that's being done only once, whenever you took the app into use and logged into Foursquare with 4squick. That's it. No hidden agenda here, no tricks, no private stuff.

Here's a couple of quick charts out of the data (as requested by @knobtviker)

Tue, 21 Jun 2011 05:38:00 -0700 4squick - The Symbian^3 Foursquare app you've been missing http://blog.4squick.com/4squick-the-symbian3-foursquare-app-youve-bee http://blog.4squick.com/4squick-the-symbian3-foursquare-app-youve-bee

After four weeks of sweat, love and tears it's finally here: 4squick version 0.650 - The Symbian^3 Foursquare app you've been missing all along.

Without further ado, here's an hands-on video of the app in action:

This is an early preview version of 4squick and the feature set is limited. Basically you are able to check-in to places, see who's there, lookup nearby places and see some stats. Browsing/adding friends, tips/todos etc are still missing.

We're constantly building new functionality and will be releasing new versions during the upcoming months.

So far we've installed and ran 4squick successfully with the following Symbian^3 devices: Nokia N8, C7, E7, C6 and E6 (Anna!) so changes are that it'll work on yours.

Why not give it a try and do comment back whether you like 4squick or not. What is the feature you miss the most? What are the best things about it?

Follow us @Twitter @4squick or @Facebook or leave a comment here!

Download

Download 4squick version 0.650
(Symbian3, Smart Installer, sis, 324 KB)

Note - If Smart Installer version fails to install on your device, you can try the other installer: 4squick version 0.650 (no Smart Installer) (Symbian3, sis, 287 KB). In this case you also have to install Qt 4.7.3 with Webkit and Qt Mobility 1.1.x manually. They come with e.g. the latest Qt SDK.

Note 2 - For APAC countries we've prepared a special version without the embedded Nokia Pure font: 4quick version 0.650 (no Pure edition) (Symbian3, sis, 271 KB). Please install the default Smart Installer enabled version first and only then install this on top of it.

Note 3 - If you want to try out a version with Ovi Maps instead of the default Google maps: 4squick version 0.650 (Ovi Maps edition) (Symbian3, sis, 287 KB). Please install the default Smart Installer enabled version first and only then install this on top of it.

Known issues

Smart Installer can cause problems. Please verify that you have WiFi connectivity when installing 4squick since up to 13MB of Qt stuff might be  downloaded from the webs. If installation problems persist, please try the version without Smart Installer.

Foursquare authentication is clumsy. It might not even work at all times, screen just stays blank. Please try to start the app again if you're experiencing this.

Three and a half weeks ago we finally got enough of the 70 seconds startup, refresh slowness, toolbar button images that take tens of seconds to load and decided to write our own 4sq app. App that focuses on speed, usability and awesomeness.

App that does not require you to wait for 2 minutes to do a simple check-in. App that does not get in to your way.

4squick_first_shot

Our aim is to launch an alpha next week and we're very keen on getting all you people using Foursquare on a Symbian^3 device on board.

Ps. 4squick is pure Qt/QML and currently we've been testing it with Nokia N8 and C7. And yep, it's easily portable to other platforms than Symbian^3.. So, while you wait, do yourself a favor and install Qt 4.7.3 :)
